Thangka | ICH Inheritor Series

Thangka | ICH Inheritor Series

Three hours. One finger. That's how long it takes to paint a single detail on a Buddha's hand — and this Thangka has thousands.

The Maker

Renqing has painted Thangka for 40 years. He's certified by China's Intangible Cultural Heritage program — one of fewer than 30 such artisans in his region. When I sat beside him, he didn't look up once.

The Place

Rebgon, Qinghai. Elevation 2,800 meters. His studio smells like mineral dust and yak butter lamps.

The Craft

Mineral pigments — lapis lazuli for blue, cinnabar for red, malachite for green — are ground by hand for seven days before a single brushstroke. The canvas is sized with yak-skin glue. A full Thangka takes 4–6 months. The gold on the Buddha's crown is real 24K.

At Home

This isn't museum glass. Place it where morning light touches it — beside your tea corner, on a quiet bookshelf, above your meditation cushion. Let it be part of your day, not apart from it.

Every cent goes back to the artisan. That's why we never discount.
