Jian Zhan Tea Cup | Wood-Fired Tenmoku

Jian Zhan Tea Cup | Wood-Fired Tenmoku

Formed by Fire, Not Repetition

Each Jian Zhan tea cup is shaped through high-temperature wood firing, where flame, ash, and glaze interact unpredictably. No two surfaces are ever the same.

Tenmoku Glaze Tradition

Inspired by historic Song Dynasty ceramics, the deep glaze reveals subtle variations — from dark, reflective tones to fine surface textures that shift under light.

Designed for Gongfu Tea

  • Ideal for focused tea sessions
  • Enhances the visual depth of tea liquor
  • Comfortable to hold with a balanced weight

Weight, Warmth, and Presence

The cup retains heat while offering a grounded tactile feel — bringing both function and sensory depth to each pour.

Each Piece is Unique

Variations in glaze pattern, tone, and texture are natural results of the firing process, making every cup one of a kind.

Each piece is unique — made to order, fired at 1,300°C, no two alike.

You can't order this glaze. You can only wait for the kiln to decide — and most of the time, it says no.

The Maker

Master Zhang fires Jian ware in a hillside kiln outside Nanping. He's been chasing the oil-spot pattern for twenty years — and still, half his pieces come out plain. He keeps them anyway.

The Place

Nanping, Fujian. The same mountains where Song Dynasty emperors sourced their tea bowls. The clay here has a mineral profile found nowhere else.

The Craft

Jian ware is fired at 1,300°C in a reduction atmosphere. Iron oxide in the glaze crystallizes as it cools, forming metallic spots that look like scattered stars. No two cups share the same pattern. No one controls where the spots land — that's between the kiln and the clay.

At Home

Hold it up to the light. The spots shimmer. Pour tea, and the glaze deepens. This cup was made for the quiet ten minutes you give yourself between things.

No middlemen. Direct from the artisan workshop.
