The Maker

Auntie Wang has been embroidering since she was fourteen. Her hands move faster than you can follow. Her son can't, and won't, learn.

The Place

An old house in Suzhou. Light falls through a skylight in the courtyard, landing exactly on her frame.

The Craft

Shu embroidery splits one silk thread into as many as 48 strands — each thinner than a human hair. A single bird's feather might take three days. The bamboo in this piece was stitched in a technique called "shading needle," where the color shifts every few millimeters. No machine can do this.

At Home

This isn't behind glass. Hang it where you'll actually see it — in a hallway you pass through every morning, above a reading chair, in that corner of the bedroom that catches afternoon light. Handmade work deserves to be lived with, not just looked at.
