ABSTRACT: Entry AB-2026-LIGHT documents a single morning of observation inside a Tibetan Buddhist monastery hall on the Aba plateau, at 3,300 meters above sea level. The subject is not an object but a phenomenon: how high-altitude light behaves when it meets handwoven pulu wool, mineral pigment, butter-lamp smoke, and cold stone. The notes below were recorded on site. They form the sensory basis of our autumn collection study — a field method we call reading a place through what it does to light.

CONDITIONS: Ambient temperature 4°C at sunrise, rising to 11°C by noon. Humidity 38%. Air carrying suspended particulates: barley flour, yak-butter vapor, juniper incense. Wind negligible inside the hall. All observations made without artificial lighting.

OBSERVATION: Sunlight at this altitude is not merely a source of illumination; it is a sharp, physical medium. The atmosphere above Aba is thin — roughly a third less dense than at sea level — and it scatters less blue light before the sun's rays reach the ground. What arrives is harder, whiter, more directional than any lowland sun. When light pierces the main hall at a 45-degree angle through the east doorway, the boundary between light and shadow is cut as cleanly as a knife. There is no gradient. A pillar is either lit or it is not.

MEASUREMENT NOTE: The transition zone between full sun and full shadow measured no more than 3 cm across the stone floor. In our studio in Chengdu, the equivalent transition on an overcast day spans a full meter. This compression of the penumbra is, we suspect, the single most under-recorded visual fact of the Tibetan plateau. Photography flattens it. The eye does not.

SPECIMEN LOG: Upon penetrating the thick pulu fabric (hand-woven monk robe), the heavy material loses its weight. Pulu is woven from highland sheep wool on a wooden loom, in strips roughly 30 cm wide, later stitched into whole cloth; a single robe can carry the labor of a month. Yet under direct sun the fibers behave like stained glass — the voids between warp and weft are filled with photons, presenting a paradoxical transparency. The red stops being a color and becomes a condition of light. LAYER 01 / AIR: Before the beam reaches the robe it crosses the hall's atmosphere: incense smoke from the morning offering, heat shimmer above butter lamps, and fine dust raised by prostrating pilgrims. Each particle deflects a fraction of the beam. The light that finally lands is already aged — filtered through the room's own breath.

LAYER 02 / WOOL: Highland sheep wool is coarser than commercial merino, with a medulla core that scatters light internally. This is why pulu does not glow like silk but absorbs and re-emits — a slow, deep luminance rather than a surface shine. Under the 45° beam, each fiber casts a micro-shadow on its neighbor; the robe reads as dense from across the hall and translucent only within arm's reach.

LAYER 03 / DYE: The crimson of monastic robes is traditionally achieved through layered dyeing, in some workshops still using locally available madder and rhubarb relatives over a mordant base. The dye sits inside the fiber rather than on it, which is why the color survives a decade of plateau sun: it fades by losing layers, not by bleaching flat. Faded robes are not damaged goods here. They are a record of hours spent in light — the textile equivalent of a long-exposure photograph.

07:40 — First light enters horizontally at door level, painting a low red band across the floor. The hall is at its coldest; the crimson robes appear almost black.

10:15 — Peak observation window (this entry). The 45° beam. Maximum contrast, maximum penetration. Shadows short and hard. This is the hour the hall looks most like a woodblock print.

13:00 — The sun clears the courtyard wall; direct beam lost. The room falls into its own lamp-light equilibrium: warm, low, flickering. Crimson reads browner here than at any other hour.

17:20 — Final slant of light through the west window, brief and orange. Within twenty minutes the hall is entirely lamp-lit. The day's cycle — knife-edge clarity dissolving into warm uncertainty — completes in under ten hours. Every material in the room has been scored, in turn, by both states of light.

PULU (氆氇) — Handwoven wool cloth of the Tibetan plateau, woven in narrow strips on body-tensioned looms and stitched into robes, blankets, and mats. Dense, weatherproof, and improving with wear.

ALTERNATE STRATA — The horizontal bands of differently aged fabric visible on older robes: panels replaced as they wore through, each fading at its own rate. A robe's timeline, written in cloth.

THE FOURTH HOUR — Field shorthand, this expedition only: the moment mid-morning when sun angle, incense density, and hall temperature briefly align. Total, once per day.

We capture these physical constants to understand how light alters the sensory properties of matter. What this morning in Aba taught us is narrower and more useful than any general theory: transparency and density are not opposites. The same pulu robe is a wall at dawn and a filter by mid-morning. Nothing about the material changed — only the angle of the world did.

Traditional craft survives on this principle. A Jian ware cup is black glaze until tilted toward a window; a sandalwood fan is closed grain until held flat to the sun, when the oil figure emerges like a hidden map. Craftsmen on this plateau and in the kilns of Fujian share one unspoken skill: they make objects that keep their secrets in shadow and spend them generously in light.
